Cape Cod Company Secures Purchase of Retired Steamship Authority Ferries

Offshore Tug & Transportation LLC, affiliated with Robert B. Our Co., purchased two retired ferries from the Steamship Authority after outbidding other competitors. The company successfully navigated document complications related to international shipments, leading to a quick acquisition of the M/V Katama and M/V Gay Head, enhancing their marine service portfolio.

Offshore Tug & Transportation LLC, a new company from Cape Cod, successfully acquired two retired freight ferries sold by the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority in December. This company is affiliated with Robert B. Our Co. Inc., a well-established site and utility construction firm founded in 1957.

The Steamship Authority announced the sale of the M/V Katama and M/V Gay Head, as they were nearing the end of their operational life, following a fleet survey report. During the bidding process, Robert B. Our Co. submitted the highest bid of $200,000 for the M/V Gay Head, while Maurice Denis from Miami, Florida offered $166,000 for the M/V Katama, with Robert B. Our Co. bidding $50,000.

The ferry service, established in 1960, facilitated 2.9 million passenger ferry journeys last year, along with significant freight transport. The request by Robert B. Our Co. to change the name of the purchaser to Offshore Tug & Transportation LLC occurred amidst the negotiations for the M/V Gay Head, with successful completion of its purchase on December 9.

For the M/V Katama, the bid from Denis faced complications related to obtaining necessary documentation amidst challenges posed by international transactions, particularly linked to the security situation in Haiti. With pressing timelines impacting the Steamship Authority’s repair facility, a deadline was proposed for Denis to proceed with the purchase.

Ultimately, after experiencing ongoing difficulties with the purchase, Villard notified the Steamship Authority on December 18 that the deal was off. Consequently, Offshore Tug & Transportation LLC was permitted to acquire the M/V Katama on December 20 for their original bid price, subsequently relocating the vessel to New Bedford.

Offshore Tug & Transportation LLC acquired two retired ferries from the Steamship Authority, overcoming significant logistics and timing challenges. The successful bids reflect the company’s strategic shift in response to rapid developments in the bidding process and underscored their capability in marine services. The sale highlights the ongoing demand and operational considerations for aging maritime vessels that are gradually being phased out.
