The NAACP has launched the Black Consumer Advisory, aimed at guiding Black consumers toward businesses that uphold diversity. In light of many companies reducing their DEI initiatives, the advisory highlights the importance of informed spending for economic empowerment. The initiative encourages consumers to support companies that align with their values, promoting accountability in corporate diversity efforts.
The NAACP has unveiled the Black Consumer Advisory, a new initiative designed to assist Black consumers in identifying businesses that prioritize diversity. This launch comes at a time when numerous organizations are diminishing their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. The NAACP emphasizes the significance of spending money in spaces that value Black individuals, reinforcing that informed purchasing can influence corporate behaviors.
As highlighted by NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson, the advisory aims to empower the Black community to recognize the value of their economic power, which exceeds $1.7 trillion annually. “The NAACP stands firm in our belief that, in a global economy, those who reject the multicultural nature of consumerism and business will be left in the past they are living in,” he stated. The initiative serves as a reminder that consumers can vocally express their principles through their spending choices.
The Black Consumer Advisory will aid consumers in making informed decisions about where their money goes, thereby promoting the support of companies that value diversity. Keisha D. Bross, the Director of Opportunity, Race and Justice at the NAACP, noted, “This is not a call to boycott, it’s a call for corporations and individuals to buy into the values and principles that reflect our interests.”
Additionally, the NAACP is not alone in monitoring corporate DEI practices. DeShuna Spencer, a Virginia-based entrepreneur, has developed a platform called DEI Watch to provide transparency regarding corporate responsibility in DEI initiatives. This resource is intended to inform consumers about which brands align with their values. Spencer stated, “But if you want to, we wanted to create a platform that’s as accurate as possible.”
The Black Consumer Advisory, along with platforms like DEI Watch, underscores the importance of informed consumerism. With a concerted effort to spotlight businesses that are in favor of diversity and inclusion, these initiatives aim to shift corporate priorities and advocate for a more equitable marketplace.
The NAACP’s launch of the Black Consumer Advisory represents a proactive approach to ensuring that Black consumers can make informed spending decisions. By providing resources to identify companies that commit to diversity, the NAACP strives to enhance economic empowerment within the Black community. Coupled with DEI Watch, these initiatives signify a growing movement toward holding corporations accountable for their DEI practices, ultimately urging them to reflect the diverse interests of all consumers.
