Welspun Living Ltd, a prominent player in the home textiles sector, plans to extend its manufacturing operations in the United States to better serve its primary market. Managing Director and CEO Dipali Goenka emphasized the company’s commitment to being geographically closer to customers despite potential tariff uncertainties stemming from US trade policies.
In an interview with PTI, Goenka revealed that the company is negotiating the establishment of a utility bedding plant in Ohio, where a fully automated pillow unit has already been launched with a $12.5 million investment. Although specifics regarding the new bedding plant’s investment remain undisclosed, Goenka is confident in the strategic expansion.
Additionally, Welspun Living intends to erect another pillow manufacturing facility in Nevada, aligning with market demand. Goenka stated that the decision to expand reflects a thorough consideration of the entire ecosystem, indicating a significant opportunity in the utility bedding sector, particularly given the pressing sleep challenges facing many Americans.
Addressing the potential impact of tariffs initiated by former President Donald Trump, Goenka remains optimistic. She noted India’s advantages, such as being the largest democracy with a skilled workforce and an expanding supply chain, positioning the country favorably even under trade restrictions. “I actually feel that India is in a positive position…Even if the tariffs come in, they’ll be very mutual,” she maintained.
In light of the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Goenka underscored Welspun Living’s preparedness to operate amidst instability. She remarked on the continual changes in global trade dynamics, stating, “We are working on it,” referring to the company’s strategy for navigating uncertainty. By monitoring supply chains and maintaining inventory closer to U.S. customers, the company aims to remain resilient.
Goenka concluded by acknowledging the need to adapt to the evolving market conditions, emphasizing that businesses can no longer rely on stable operations. She remarked, “You will have to continue to resolve, and that is what we are doing,” highlighting Welspun Living’s proactive approach in a tumultuous business environment.
Welspun Living Ltd is set to enhance its manufacturing presence in the United States to respond effectively to market demands. CEO Dipali Goenka’s insights reflect confidence in India’s capabilities to withstand potential tariffs and navigate challenging global trade scenarios. The company’s strategic investments in production facilities signify an adaptive approach to maintaining competitiveness in the ever-evolving home textiles landscape.
